I am still in the dark as to how exactly. The strange effect of the Chorus sounding like it is raised a whole tone up, but in fact is lowered a half step. > chromatic descent (Db triad to C) with whole step > major - gets me every time! In roman numerals would this be: i7 i7 bVI (9) | i7 i7 bVI (9) | i7 i7 III7 | VI(6) bVII (9sus4) i7 ? Simply having the minor 3rd as a bass effectually pivots the tonal center to a major Db6~ which the intro sounds totally major, yet the verse is smoothly in Bm7 with the Bb as the bass! Whatever happened to Double? I guess being Swiss is a bit of a drawback if you want to be a pop success. Instead of keeping the Bb bass, it goes to Db - and now we hear the maj7 (C) echoing the key of the chorus, which is also neat. The clever thing is that the use of Bb6 (Gm/Bb) naturally makes the transition back to the Bbm (Db) of the intro logical - but still another very effective change. The Ab and Bb are borrowed from C minor, so the chorus also contains hints of a modulation up a whole step (Bbm-Cm), as well as down a half-step (Db-C). It begins with the piano marking the melody, stressing those E naturals before going for the bluesy Eb when it hits the Ab chord. (It's something like the classic jazz backdoor progression, but that's from a major bVII, not a minor one.) The vocal melody is all Bb minor pentatonic, except for one C, and a brief Fb in the last line (on the Gb chord).īut then there that gorgeous shift from Bbm7 to C major - gets me every time! It's an odd mix of chromatic descent (Db triad to C) with whole step bass ascent. The verse is in Bb minor - mostly aeolian, but with that dorian Eb7 inserted - suggesting it might be about to resolve to Ab major, but instead goes to Ebm7 and back to Bb minor. The intro (either the piano or sax melody) accents all the "wistful" upper extensions on that Db chord (6, 9, maj7). There's then a piano solo on the verse, and a repeat of the chorus, which repeats again and fades. INTERLUDE = same as intro, with sax solo.

(The vocal melody is almost entirely Bb minor pentatonic, with one 9th, and one bluesy Fb on the Gb6 chord.

Desperate to bring her home, he joins a band of privateers and finds himself embracing the American patriot cause-a cause he’d once sworn to defeat.
